About The Song

“Hurt So Bad” was released by Linda Ronstadt as a single in March 1980 via Asylum Records. It appears as track two on her album Mad Love, issued February 1980. Produced by Peter Asher, the track runs 3:16 and delivers a powerful rock-soul ballad with driving drums, Danny Kortchmar’s soaring guitar solo, and Ronstadt’s passionate, full-throated vocal that builds from quiet ache to raw intensity.
Written by Teddy Randazzo, Bobby Weinstein, and Bobby Hart, the song was originally a 1965 Top 10 hit for Little Anthony & The Imperials. Ronstadt’s version became the most successful recording of the track.
The lyrics capture the sting of unexpectedly seeing an ex: “I know you don’t know what I’m going through / Standing here looking at you / Well, let me tell you that it hurts so bad / It makes me feel so sad / It makes me hurt so bad to see you again.” A second verse adds the pain of hearing others say the ex has moved on: “Like needles and pins / People say you’ve been making out okay / He’s in love, don’t stand in his way.” The bridge pleads for reconciliation: “Why don’t you stay and let me make it up to you? / I’ll do anything you want me to.” The chorus repeats the title with escalating emotion, turning personal vulnerability into an anthemic confession.
The single climbed to No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100, spending 11 weeks on the chart, and reached No. 25 on Adult Contemporary. It marked her second Top 10 pop hit from Mad Love (after “How Do I Make You” at No. 10) and helped the album achieve platinum status. The B-side was “Justine.”
Ronstadt performed the song regularly on her 1980 tour, including a memorable concert at Television Center Studios in Hollywood on April 24, 1980, later released on official video. The track has appeared on compilations such as The Very Best of Linda Ronstadt and remains a staple in playlists.

Lyric

I know you
Don’t know what I’m going through
Standing here, looking at you
Well, let me tell you that it hurt so bad
It makes me feel so sad
It makes me hurt so bad to see you again
Like needles and pins
People say
You’ve been making out okay
He’s in love, don’t stand in his way
Well, let me tell you that it hurt so bad
It makes me feel so sad
It’s gonna hurt so bad if you walk away
Why don’t you stay
And let me make it up to you?
I’ll do anything you want me too
You loved me before
Please, love me again
I can’t let you go back to her
Please don’t go, please don’t go
Please don’t go, please don’t go
Hurt so bad
Come back, it hurt so bad
Don’t make it hurt so bad
I’m beggin’ you, please
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
Come back, it hurt so bad
Come back it hurt so bad
I’m beggin’ you please
Oh, no
No
